MPTFE (modified PTFE) is a chemically modified version of PTFE. It adds new capabilities and characteristics to virgin PTFE. The modifications occur in the molecule itself and offers enhanced features that play a role in special applications, especially in the area of safety and reliability. The best known brand name is TFM® of Dyneon/3M.

MPTFE or TFM®

One factor that makes MPTFE special is the density of the molecular structure.  This results in a significantly lower rate of gas permeation for the same thickness of material when compared to PTFE.  This characteristic is extremely important when used in a highly corrosive environment.  With its dense molecular structure, MPTFE also offers a smoother surface finish than PTFE. Like PTFE, MPTFE is chemically inert and has a similar range for continuous usage temperature, as well as similar resistance to water absorption. It also retains much of PTFE’s non-stick characteristics. Furthermore it has a slightly higher spring rate, but noticeably better fatigue properties and better stress recovery. In addition it is easier to weld than PTFE.

MPTFE offers possibilities for new applications or pushes the limits of regular PTFE, especially in applications where security is paramount. Applications can be found in the sealing technology, construction and the semi-conductor industry.
